Understanding the Basics

Pallet Anatomy & Terminology

Before diving into sizes, understand the key measurements and components of a standard pallet.

Key Dimensions

Length (Stringer Length)

The measurement along the stringers or stringer boards. In a 48×40 pallet, this is the 48-inch dimension. This is the side you see when facing the pallet entry points.

Width (Deckboard Length)

The measurement along the deck boards. In a 48×40 pallet, this is the 40-inch dimension. This is the side perpendicular to the fork entry.

Height

Standard pallet height is typically 6 inches (150 mm) for block pallets and 5–6.5 inches for stringer pallets. This clearance accommodates standard forklift tines.

Structural Components

Top Deck Boards

The upper surface where goods are placed. Typically 5–7 boards for a standard 48×40 pallet. Wider boards provide better load distribution.

Stringers / Blocks

Stringers are the long structural boards running the length of the pallet. Block pallets use blocks of solid wood or compressed material at key stress points instead.

Bottom Deck Boards

The lower surface providing stability and forklift access. May be full-perimeter (all 4 edges) or use only 3 boards for lighter applications.

Chamfered Edges

Beveled lead board edges that make forklift entry easier and reduce damage from impacts during handling.

Technical Reference

Understanding Load Capacity

Load capacity is not a single number — it depends on how the pallet is being used. Understanding these three ratings is critical for safe, efficient operations.

Static Load

Highest Rating

The maximum weight a pallet can support when it is sitting still on a flat, solid surface with the load evenly distributed. This is the highest capacity rating because there are no dynamic forces or point-load stresses. Typical for warehouse floor stacking and long-term static storage. A standard 48×40 GMA pallet can support approximately 2,500 lbs in static conditions.

Dynamic Load

Medium Rating

The maximum weight a pallet can support while being moved by a forklift, pallet jack, or conveyor system. Dynamic forces such as acceleration, braking, and turning create additional stress on the pallet structure. This rating is typically 10–20% lower than static load. For a standard GMA pallet, expect approximately 2,200 lbs dynamic capacity. Always use this rating for day-to-day warehouse operations.

Rack Load

Lowest Rating

The maximum weight a pallet can support when placed across racking beams, where only the outer edges of the pallet rest on supports. This creates a bending stress in the center of the pallet, making it the most demanding scenario. Rack load is typically 15–25% lower than dynamic load. A standard GMA pallet supports approximately 2,000 lbs on racks. Never exceed this rating in racking systems — failure can cause catastrophic collapse.

Important Safety Note

Load capacity ratings assume evenly distributed weight, properly maintained pallets in good condition, and standard environmental conditions. Used pallets may have reduced capacity depending on their grade. Always inspect pallets before loading and derate capacity by 10–25% for Grade B and C pallets. When in doubt, contact our team for guidance specific to your application.

Industry Specific

Which Size for Your Industry?

Different industries have standardized on specific pallet sizes for optimal efficiency. Here is what we recommend based on decades of experience serving Sunnyvale-area businesses.

🛒

Grocery & Retail

48" × 40" (GMA)

Universal compatibility with retail distribution centers, grocery store backrooms, and standard racking. Required by most major retailers including Walmart, Costco, and Kroger.

🍺

Beverage & Brewing

42" × 42"

Square footprint ideal for kegs, cases, and barrel storage. Sunnyvale breweries commonly use this size for distribution. Compatible with standard beverage industry automation.

🔧

Automotive & Manufacturing

48" × 48"

Large surface area supports heavy engine blocks, body panels, and oversized parts. The extra square footage reduces the number of pallets needed per shipment.

⚗️

Chemical & Pharmaceutical

48" × 42"

Optimized for drum storage and bag-on-pallet configurations. The slightly wider profile prevents chemical containers from overhanging pallet edges.

❄️

Dairy & Cold Storage

40" × 40"

Compact footprint maximizes cold storage space utilization. The smaller size fits through standard cooler doors and works well in tight refrigerated warehouse aisles.

🌍

Export & International

1200 × 800mm (EUR)

Required for European markets and many international destinations. Must be ISPM-15 heat-treated for cross-border shipment. GreenCycle offers compliant export pallets.

Weight Data

Pallet Weight Reference

Pallet weight varies based on wood species, moisture content, construction method, and number of deck boards. These ranges cover typical conditions.

Factors Affecting Weight

Wood Species

Hardwoods (oak, maple) weigh 20–40% more than softwoods (pine, spruce). A hardwood 48×40 may weigh 55+ lbs vs. 33 lbs for pine.

Moisture Content

Green (fresh-cut) lumber contains 30–50% moisture, adding 10–15 lbs to a standard pallet. Kiln-dried or air-dried lumber is significantly lighter.

Board Count & Thickness

A 7-board top deck weighs more than a 5-board deck. Thicker 1" deck boards add 5–8 lbs over standard 5/8" boards.

Construction Style

Block pallets with 9 blocks weigh 5–10 lbs more than equivalent stringer pallets. Four-way entry block pallets are the heaviest common design.
