Types of Wood Pallets
We carry every major pallet configuration. Each type has distinct advantages depending on your load requirements, equipment, and warehouse layout.
Stringer Pallets
The most common pallet design in North America. Two or three parallel pieces of lumber (stringers) support the deck boards. Cost-effective, widely available, and easy to repair. Typically two-way entry, though notched stringers allow partial four-way access for forklifts.
Block Pallets
Uses blocks of solid wood between the top and bottom decks instead of stringers. True four-way entry means forklifts and pallet jacks can access from any side. Stronger overall construction and preferred by many automated warehouse systems.
Two-Way Pallets
Designed for forklift entry from two opposite sides only. The closed sides provide additional deck support and higher load capacity for heavy or concentrated loads. Often used in racking systems where directional access is fixed.
Four-Way Pallets
Accessible from all four sides by forklifts and pallet jacks. Maximum flexibility in warehousing and shipping operations. Available in both stringer (notched) and block configurations. The most versatile choice for high-throughput facilities.
Standard Pallet Sizes
We stock all six standard North American pallet sizes. Custom sizes are also available through our manufacturing program with a 5-10 day lead time.
GMA / Grocery
The industry standard. Used by over 30% of all pallets in the US. Required by most grocery and retail distribution centers.
Telecom / Paint
Square footprint ideal for drums and cylindrical loads. Common in chemical, paint, and telecommunications industries.
Drums / Bulk
Extra-large square design for maximizing container space. Popular for bulk materials, agriculture, and drum storage.
Automotive
Slightly wider than GMA. Standard in the automotive and chemical sectors for matching container widths.
Dairy / Military
Compact square pallet used in dairy processing and military logistics.
Beverages
Narrower footprint optimized for bottling lines and beverage distribution.
Wood Species
The type of wood affects a pallet's weight, load capacity, durability, and cost. GreenCycle Pallets stocks pallets made from a variety of species so we can match the right material to your application.
Southern Yellow Pine
The most common softwood for pallets. Excellent strength-to-weight ratio, readily available, and cost-effective. Accepts heat treatment well.
Oak (Red & White)
Premium hardwood with outstanding load capacity and durability. Heavier than pine, but resists wear and impact better. Ideal for heavy-duty and repeated-use pallets.
Mixed Hardwood
Includes maple, birch, ash, and other regional hardwoods. Balanced performance, typically used in Grade B and C recycled pallets.
Softwood Blend
Spruce, fir, and other softwoods. Lighter weight, lower cost, and perfectly suitable for one-way shipping and light-duty applications.
Used vs. New
Choosing between used and new pallets depends on your budget, application, and sustainability goals. Here is how they compare:
Used Pallets
- 40-60% less expensive than new
- Environmentally responsible — reduces landfill waste
- Immediately available in large volumes
- Inspected and graded for quality assurance
New Pallets
- Pristine appearance for retail-facing loads
- Maximum load capacity guaranteed
- Custom sizes and configurations available
- Ideal for automated handling systems
Grade Comparison
Every used wood pallet is hand-inspected and assigned a grade. Use this table to determine which grade best fits your needs and budget.
| Feature | Grade A | Grade B | Grade C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Like new — clean, bright wood | Normal wear, minor scuffs | Visible wear, staining, repairs |
| Structural Integrity | 100% — no repairs needed | 100% — fully functional | 90%+ — may have repaired boards |
| Best For | Retail display, automated systems | General warehousing, shipping | One-way export, internal use |
| Load Capacity | Full rated capacity | Full rated capacity | Slightly reduced (~90%) |
| Price Range | $$$ | $$ | $ |
| Availability | Moderate | High — most common | High |

Heat Treatment
If your pallets are crossing international borders, ISPM-15 heat treatment is required by most countries to prevent the spread of invasive insects and pathogens. GreenCycle Pallets operates an on-site heat treatment chamber at our Sunnyvale facility.
During the process, the core temperature of the wood is raised to at least 56 degrees Celsius (133 degrees Fahrenheit) for a minimum of 30 minutes. After treatment, each pallet is stamped with the internationally recognized HT and debarked (DB) marks, along with our facility registration number.
We can heat-treat pallets of any size — standard or custom. Turnaround is typically 24-48 hours, and we offer rush processing for urgent export shipments. Heat treatment is available for both new and used pallets.
