Many companies set waste-reduction or landfill-diversion targets. For businesses with significant receiving or shipping activity, pallets are often one of the largest and easiest waste streams to address, which makes pallet recycling a natural place to start.
Wood pallets that are thrown away take up dumpster and landfill space even though most have remaining value. Damaged pallets can usually be repaired, and pallets that cannot be repaired still contain usable boards and wood fiber. Diverting pallets from the trash is often one of the quickest wins in a waste-reduction program.
A good pallet recycling program works in tiers. The first tier is direct reuse: pallets in good condition are sorted, inspected, and put back into service as-is. The second is repair: damaged pallets get new boards or other fixes that restore them to working condition. The third is material recovery: pallets beyond economical repair are taken apart, good boards are kept for repairs, and the rest of the wood can often be ground into mulch or biomass.
Each tier keeps more material in use. Reusing a pallet avoids building a new one, and repairing extends a pallet's useful life. Whatever your exact goal, the more pallets you keep at the higher tiers, the more value you get from the wood.
To set up a program, start by looking at your pallet flows: how many pallets you receive, what sizes and condition, and what currently happens to them. Then arrange regular collection; pickup is available through partner suppliers in our network, depending on your location. Track pallet volumes alongside your other waste data, and train staff to keep pallets separated from general trash so more of them can be reused or repaired.
