Pallet recycling is one of the most impactful yet underappreciated environmental success stories in modern industry. In the United States, over 849 million pallets are recovered for recycling each year, representing a recycling rate exceeding 95 percent. Even pallets that are too damaged to repair are ground into useful products like mulch, animal bedding, and biomass fuel rather than being landfilled.
The water footprint of pallet recycling is another important but often overlooked benefit. Manufacturing new lumber requires substantial water inputs for tree growth, sawmill processing, and dust control. Recycling pallets bypasses all of these water-intensive steps, consuming only the modest amounts of water needed for facility operations. In water-stressed regions, the cumulative water savings from large-scale pallet recycling can be meaningful contributions to overall water conservation efforts.
Businesses that choose recycled pallets over new pallets can quantify their environmental contribution and report it as part of their corporate sustainability programs. A company purchasing 10,000 recycled pallets per year avoids approximately 230 metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions, conserves 35,000 board feet of lumber, and diverts roughly 175 tons of wood waste from landfill.
