A pallet is a flat, portable platform designed to support goods during storage, handling, and transportation. Pallets serve as the foundational unit of modern logistics, enabling forklifts, pallet jacks, and automated conveyor systems to move large quantities of products quickly and efficiently. Without pallets, the cost and complexity of moving goods through warehouses, onto trucks, and across global supply chains would increase dramatically. It is estimated that over two billion pallets are in active circulation in the United States alone, underscoring their critical importance to commerce.
Pallets come in two primary structural designs: stringer pallets and block pallets. Stringer pallets use two or three parallel boards (called stringers) running between the top and bottom deck boards, providing two-way or partial four-way entry for handling equipment. Block pallets use nine wooden blocks positioned at the corners, edges, and center to connect the decks, offering true four-way entry from any side. Stringer pallets dominate the North American market due to their lower manufacturing cost, while block pallets are the international standard and are preferred in Europe and Asia for their superior versatility and strength.
The most common pallet material by far is wood, which accounts for roughly 90-95 percent of all pallets manufactured worldwide. Wood pallets are affordable, strong, repairable, and recyclable. However, pallets are also made from plastic, metal, corrugated cardboard, and press-wood (composite) materials, each offering distinct advantages for specific applications. Plastic pallets are favored in pharmaceutical and food-processing environments for their hygiene and durability. Metal pallets are used in heavy-duty industrial settings where extreme loads or harsh conditions are present. Corrugated pallets serve as lightweight, one-way shipping platforms for air freight and export.
Pallets are used in virtually every industry that involves physical goods. Grocery and retail supply chains rely on standardized 48x40-inch GMA pallets to move products from manufacturers to distribution centers to store shelves. The automotive industry uses oversized pallets for parts distribution. Chemical and pharmaceutical companies require specialized pallets that meet strict hygiene and contamination standards. E-commerce fulfillment centers consume enormous volumes of pallets to feed their automated sorting and storage systems. In each case, the pallet acts as the universal interface between the product and the material handling infrastructure.
Beyond their primary logistics function, pallets play an increasingly important role in sustainability. The pallet industry is one of the most successful examples of circular economy principles in action, with over 95 percent of discarded wood pallets in the United States being recycled, repaired, or repurposed rather than sent to landfill. By choosing recycled pallets, businesses reduce their demand for virgin lumber, lower their carbon footprint, and contribute to a more sustainable supply chain. Understanding the fundamentals of pallet types, materials, and uses is the first step toward making smarter, greener logistics decisions.
